The Timișoara Observatory

The Timișoara Observatory is not a planetarium. It is a working astronomical station, founded in 1880, still operating from its original 1910 dome. On public nights, a small group gathers to look through a 160-millimetre refractor.

The gate on Strada Popa Șapcă is easy to miss. A narrow driveway opens between two apartment blocks, and at the end of it stands a small brick building with a white dome. On a Thursday evening in October, a group of about twenty people waits outside. The door opens at eight. A man in a fleece jacket, who introduces himself as Radu, tells us that the dome is original, built in 1910, and that the telescope inside is a 160-millimetre refractor. He does not say this with any ceremony. He says it the way you might mention that the kettle is put away.

The Timișoara Observatory is not a planetarium. It is a working astronomical station, founded in 1880 as part of the city's meteorological and astronomical institute. The first director was Victor Tarczali, a physicist who had studied in Budapest. The original instruments were a meridian circle and a small refractor. The current building, with its zinc dome, was completed in 1910. It has been in continuous use since then, except for a period after the Second World War when the equipment was moved to Bucharest and later returned. The observatory is now run by the Romanian Academy, and it shares the site with a seismology station.

A Thursday Night in Autumn

Inside, the ground floor is a single room with wooden benches, a whiteboard, and a bookcase filled with star atlases. On the wall, a poster lists the Messier objects. Radu begins with a short talk. He explains that tonight we will look at Albireo, a double star in Cygnus, and then at the Moon, which is a waxing gibbous. He warns us that the sky is partly cloudy. If it clouds over completely, he says, we will look at photographs instead. No one leaves. The group is a mix of students, a family with two children, and several older people who seem to know each other. One woman has brought a thermos of tea.

The stairs to the dome are steep and spiral. The dome itself is cramped: six people at a time is the maximum. The telescope is a long black tube on a German equatorial mount. Radu swings it towards Albireo. The eyepiece is at an awkward height, so you have to crouch. When my turn comes, I see two points of light, one gold and one blue, separated by a thin gap. It is not a spectacular sight in the way a photograph of a galaxy is spectacular. It is simply two stars, close together, in the right place. Radu says they are about 430 light-years away. He says this without emphasis, as if it were a fact you could check. You can check it, later, in a book.

The observatory does not try to be impressive. It tries to be accurate.

The Moon is next. Through the telescope, the craters along the terminator are sharp. The children are told to look quickly and then move aside. The mount has a slow-motion control that Radu adjusts with his fingers. He does not use a computer. The telescope is not computerised. There is a clock drive that keeps the object in view, but it is mechanical. Radu says the drive needs winding every two hours. He says this is part of the job.

The history of the observatory is not well known in the city. It was founded at a time when Timișoara was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and its first purpose was to provide time signals for the railways and to record weather data. The astronomical work was secondary. In the 1920s, after the city became part of Romania, the observatory was integrated into the University of Timișoara. During the Second World War, the instruments were packed and sent to Bucharest for safekeeping. They returned in 1948. The dome was repaired in the 1970s. The telescope was re-coated in 2003. The current staff is small: a director, two researchers, and a technician. They do not have a large budget. The public nights are run by volunteers.

What the Observatory Does Now

The observatory still does science. It participates in the American Association of Variable Star Observers (AAVSO) programme, monitoring bright variable stars. It also records sunspots. The data is sent to international databases. Radu shows me a logbook from the 1930s, with neat handwriting in Hungarian and Romanian. The entries record cloud cover, temperature, and the times of observations. The current logbook is digital, but the format is similar. The work is slow. A single measurement might take half an hour. The results are not dramatic. They are, however, used.

The public nights began in 2010, when the observatory was renovated with a small grant. They run twice a month, on Thursdays, from September to June. The cost is 10 lei per person, or 5 lei for students. Children under seven are free. The money goes towards maintenance. The evenings are in Romanian, but Radu speaks English if asked. On the night I attended, there were no cancellations. The sky cleared enough for about an hour of observing. The group left at ten. Radu stayed to close the dome and wind the clock drive.

The observatory is not a tourist attraction in the usual sense. There is no gift shop, no café, no multimedia exhibition. There is a toilet, but it is not always open. The building is not wheelchair accessible. The stairs to the dome are narrow. If you have mobility issues, you can look through a smaller telescope on the ground floor, but the view is limited. These are not things the observatory hides. They are simply the conditions. The staff are aware of them. They do what they can with what they have.

The View from the Dome

From the dome, you can see the rooftops of the Fabric district and, beyond them, the Bega canal. The city lights make deep-sky observing difficult. The Milky Way is not visible. But the Moon and planets are still rewarding. On a clear night, you can see the rings of Saturn, the moons of Jupiter, the polar caps of Mars. These are the objects that people remember. The observatory does not promise more than that. It does not pretend to be an dark-sky site. It is an urban observatory, and it has always been one.

The building itself is showing its age. The plaster on the outside is cracked in places. The dome mechanism requires regular greasing. The roof of the main room leaks during heavy rain. There is a plan to replace the dome with a new one, but no date has been set. The director, Dr. Agnes Kerezsi, told me that the priority is to keep the telescope operational. The rest can wait. She has been in charge since 2015. She is an astronomer by training and a pragmatist by necessity.

The observatory is open to the public on the first and third Thursday of each month, from 20:00 to 22:00. It is closed in July and August. To get there, take tram 4 to Piața Traian, then walk two blocks north on Strada Popa Șapcă. The entrance is between numbers 12 and 14. There is no sign on the street, only a small plaque on the door. If you go, bring warm clothes. The dome is not heated. And be patient. The sky does what it wants.

On the night I visited, a woman in her seventies told me she had come because she had never looked through a telescope before. She looked at the Moon and said, 'It's just like the pictures.' Then she looked again. She stayed for a while. When she left, she thanked Radu. He nodded. Then he went back to the telescope, adjusted the focus, and waited for the next person. The line was not long, but it was steady.
