Timișoara's trolleybuses have served the city since the 1960s, still running on several routes. The network is small, the fleet is mixed, and the infrastructure is ageing. This is how it works and why it survives.
Timișoara's trolleybus network is a quiet workhorse of the city's public transport, a system that has been running since the 1960s and still carries passengers on several routes today. Unlike the trams, which have a higher profile and a more extensive network, the trolleybuses occupy a middle ground: they are electric, like trams, but they run on rubber tyres and can weave through traffic, yet they are tethered to overhead wires. The network is not large, but it is persistent. It serves a mix of residential districts, industrial zones and the city centre, and for many residents it is simply part of the daily commute.
The trolleybus system in Timișoara was established in the 1960s, part of a wave of electrification in Romanian cities during that decade. The first routes were laid out to connect the growing residential areas on the outskirts with the industrial platforms and the city core. Over the years, the network expanded and contracted in response to demand and infrastructure costs. Today, it is operated by the local public transport company, which also runs trams and buses. The trolleybuses share the same fare system and much of the same infrastructure, but they have their own distinct challenges.
Routes And The City They Serve
At present, the trolleybus network consists of a handful of routes. They are numbered, as is common in Romanian cities, and they tend to radiate from the centre towards the north, east and south. Some routes are short, shuttling between a major square and a residential quarter, while others cross the city. They pass through areas like Fabric, where the old industrial buildings stand alongside newer developments, and Iosefin, a district with a mix of housing and workshops. The trolleybuses also serve the area around the main railway station, providing a link for commuters arriving from other towns.
The routes are not as frequent as the trams, and in the evenings the intervals can stretch. But during peak hours, the trolleybuses are well used. They are particularly important for people who live in neighbourhoods not served by the tram lines. For example, the route that runs along Calea Șagului, a long avenue lined with apartment blocks and commercial spaces, is a lifeline for residents there. Another route climbs towards the north of the city, serving the complex of student dormitories and the technical university. These are not glamorous journeys, but they are necessary.
One of the peculiarities of the Timișoara trolleybus network is that it is not isolated from the rest of the city's transport. The overhead wires sometimes cross tram wires, and the vehicles must negotiate these intersections carefully. The trolleybuses themselves are a mix of older and newer models. In recent years, the fleet has been partially renewed with second-hand vehicles acquired from other European cities. These are often articulated buses that have been converted to trolleybus operation, or dedicated trolleybuses that have been retired from cities like Zurich or Geneva. They are well-built but not new, and they come with their own quirks.
The Fleet And Its Quirks
The vehicles that run on Timișoara's trolleybus lines are predominantly of two types: the older Romanian-made vehicles, some of which date back to the 1980s and 1990s, and the more recent acquisitions from Western Europe. The Romanian models, such as the DAC, were once the backbone of the network. Many have been retired, but a few remain in service, often as reserve vehicles or on less demanding routes. They are simple, robust and easy to maintain, but they lack the comfort and efficiency of modern vehicles. The second-hand vehicles from abroad are typically low-floor or partially low-floor, with better accessibility and more advanced electrical systems. However, spare parts can be difficult to source, and the maintenance staff must be familiar with a variety of models.
The condition of the fleet is a constant concern. The trolleybuses are subject to wear and tear from the city's roads, which in some places are not in the best shape. The overhead wires also require regular maintenance. In winter, ice can build up on the wires, causing problems for the pantographs. The transport company has to send out crews to de-ice the lines, sometimes using vehicles equipped with special equipment. In summer, heat can cause the wires to sag, and the pantographs can lose contact, leaving the trolleybus stranded. These are not everyday occurrences, but they happen often enough to be a nuisance.
A trolleybus is only as good as the wire above it.
The infrastructure itself is ageing. Much of the overhead wiring was installed decades ago, and while it has been maintained, it is not immune to failure. The supporting poles, some of which are made of concrete, are showing their age. Insulators crack, and the wires themselves can corrode. The city has undertaken piecemeal upgrades, but there has been no comprehensive modernisation of the trolleybus network in recent years. This is in contrast to the tram network, which has benefited from European Union funding for new tracks and vehicles. The trolleybuses have largely been left out of such major investment programmes.
The lack of investment has consequences. The trolleybus network has not expanded; if anything, it has contracted. Some routes that once existed have been replaced by buses or simply discontinued. The reasons are varied: low ridership, the cost of maintaining the overhead wires, and the availability of buses that can run without fixed infrastructure. Buses are more flexible; they can be rerouted if a street is closed, and they do not require the same level of electrical infrastructure. But they are also less environmentally friendly, and they contribute to air pollution and noise. The trolleybus, by contrast, is quiet and emits no exhaust fumes at street level.
Keeping The Wheels Turning
Operating a trolleybus network in a city that is not wealthy is a constant struggle. The transport company, which is owned by the municipality, faces budget constraints. Fares are kept low for social reasons, and subsidies from the local budget are limited. The company has to prioritise its spending, and often the trolleybus network is lower on the list than trams or buses. This means that maintenance is sometimes deferred, and the vehicles are kept in service longer than they should be. The staff are dedicated, but they work with what they have.
The drivers of trolleybuses have a particular set of skills. They must be able to handle a vehicle that is heavier than a bus and that has limited manoeuvrability due to the overhead wires. They must also be able to deal with the occasional dewirement. When a trolleybus loses contact with the wires, the driver has to get out and reset the pantograph, using a long pole that is kept in the cabin. This can happen at intersections or when the vehicle takes a corner too quickly. It is a manual task, and in bad weather it is unpleasant. Passengers sometimes help, but usually they just wait.
Another challenge is the integration of the trolleybus network with the rest of the public transport system. The ticketing system is unified, which is a plus, but the schedules are not always well coordinated. A passenger arriving by tram at a major interchange may have to wait a long time for a connecting trolleybus. The city has been working on a new transport master plan, but progress is slow. Meanwhile, the trolleybus continues to run, a familiar sight on the streets of Timișoara, even if its future is uncertain.
There are those who argue that the trolleybus network should be expanded, not reduced. They point to the environmental benefits and the fact that the overhead wires are already in place on many streets. They also note that trolleybuses can be equipped with small diesel generators or batteries to allow them to run off-wire for short distances, which would increase flexibility. But such upgrades cost money, and the city has other priorities. For now, the network survives, a relic of a more optimistic era of electrification.
The trolleybus network in Timișoara is not a tourist attraction. It is not a heritage line, like the trams that run on the circular route through the city. It is simply a part of the everyday fabric of the city. It carries people to work, to school, to the market. It is taken for granted by most residents, and it is only noticed when it breaks down or when a route is threatened with closure. But it is a system that has been running for over half a century, and it has outlasted many of the political and economic changes that have swept through Romania in that time. Whether it will continue to run for another half-century is an open question.
