Out of the city, up into the vines
Recaș sits about forty minutes east of Timișoara by car, where the plain gives way to low, folded hills planted with vines. The road is straightforward and the traffic thins once you pass the city limits, but the last stretch to some cellars is on gravel or dirt, so a normal hatchback is fine in dry weather and less so after heavy rain. Start early if you plan to hit more than two wineries. Tastings in this part of Banat are unhurried, and a single visit can easily run ninety minutes once the conversation gets going.

Leave Timișoara
Head east on DN6 towards Lugoj, then turn north for Recaș. Fuel up before you leave the city; there are petrol stations on the way but not many once you are in the hills. Allow about forty minutes without stops.

First winery, booked in advance
Most estates ask for at least a day's notice, some a week, especially at weekends. Ring or email the day before to confirm. A standard tasting covers four to six wines and lasts an hour or more. Have a proper breakfast first — the pours are not small.

If you have booked two back-to-back, keep the first visit tight. Otherwise ask whether you can walk the vineyard; some estates allow it, some do not during spraying season. The views from the higher plots look east over the Bega valley.

There are a few simple restaurants and a pizzeria on the main road through Recaș. Nothing fancy, but solid Romanian cooking: ciorbă, grilled meats, and a plate of local cheese if you ask. Wine by the glass is usually the estate stuff at a fair price.

Your palate will be duller by now, so this is the slot for reds or for buying rather than lingering. If you are driving, spit. It is normal here and no one will think less of you. Bottles bought at the cellar are often cheaper than in Timișoara shops.

Return on the same route, or loop through Buziaș if you want a change of scenery. Aim to be back in Timișoara before dark if you are not familiar with the unlit side roads. If you have bought wine, leave it in the boot, not in the sun.

A single cellar, done properly
If you only have an afternoon, pick one winery and give it your full attention rather than rushing two. The Recaș hills are close enough to Timișoara for a half-day outing, but the experience is poorer if you are watching the clock. Book ahead, ask what is open, and be honest about how much time you have. A focused visit beats a frantic crawl every time.

The drive takes about forty minutes to the edge of the wine area. Traffic out of the city can be slow on weekday afternoons, so add ten minutes to whatever the map says. Bring water for the car.

Give yourself a few minutes before the tasting starts. Ask to see the cellar if there is one; many are small and cool and worth the ten-minute detour. Photography is usually fine, but ask first, especially in working cellars.

Expect white varieties first — Fetească Regală, Riesling, Sauvignon — then reds, often Cabernet or Merlot, sometimes Cadarcă. Ask what is typical for the area rather than what is most expensive. Spitting is polite, not rude.

How to arrange visits before you go
Not every winery in the Recaș area is set up for drop-in visitors. Some are working farms with no tasting room, others only open by appointment, and a few host larger groups but not individuals. The reliable approach is to contact two or three in advance, state your date and group size, and ask what they can offer. Email is fine; phone is better if you speak Romanian or the person on the other end speaks English. Do not simply turn up at a gate and expect a welcome, although it occasionally works in quieter periods.

Look for wineries that mention visits or tastings on their website or Facebook page. Send a short message with date, time, number of people, and whether you need an English-speaking host. If you get no reply within two days, ring.

Plans change at harvest. A polite call the day before to check the time still stands saves a wasted drive. Ask about parking and whether the access road is suitable for a normal car.

Many small producers do not take cards, and some have no card machine at all. Bring enough lei for tastings and any bottles you plan to buy. ATMs are scarce outside Recaș town.

What to expect at the table
Tasting room customs in Banat are relaxed but not formless. You will usually be hosted by someone who works the cellar or the vineyard, not a professional sommelier. They will pour generously and expect you to say something, even if it is only that you like it. Honesty is appreciated more than flattery. If you do not like a wine, a simple 'not for me' is fine. If you do, ask about the vintage and the variety; that is the conversation they want to have.

Spitting is normal and expected if you are driving. A spit bucket is usually on the table or nearby. If there is none, pour the remainder into your empty water glass rather than back into the bottle. Never pour wine back into the bottle.

Cellars, barrels, and people are all fine subjects, but ask first. Some producers are happy; a few are not, especially during harvest or if the space is a working one with staff mid-task. A quick 'pot să fotografiez?' goes a long way.

If the tasting was free or cheap, buying a bottle or two is the normal way to say thanks. If you are not buying, thank the host clearly and leave. Do not linger if the next group is waiting.
