Getting there and around
Cetate is the most connected quarter in Timișoara on foot and the least convenient by car. The three squares are linked by Piața Victoriei and its continuation, and the whole walled core is about fifteen minutes end to end at an unhurried pace. From Piața Libertății you can reach the Bega in five minutes and follow the quays north to the Rose Park or south towards the Iosefin bridges. Timișoara Nord railway station is a fifteen- to twenty-minute walk north-west along Bulevardul Republicii, or one stop on the tram. The bus and coach station for airport transfers and regional services is a similar distance in the same direction. By car the old town is largely pedestrian or one-way, several streets are cobbled, and through-routes are limited to the ring boulevards.
When to go
The old town is a summer city break first, when the terraces in Piața Unirii and on Strada Alba Iulia operate and the Bega towpath is at its best. That is also when the drawbacks bite: amplified music from those terraces runs until midnight from Thursday, and cleaning crews start before seven, so light sleepers should think about a Friday or Saturday in summer. Outside those months the squares and the Opera calendar carry the visit, and walking the walled core end to end takes the same unhurried fifteen minutes.
