Picking where to stay in Romania comes down to what you want out of the trip: a city break, a mountain base, or the Black Sea coast. Timișoara is the western gateway, a city that grew as separate districts around a fortress and never quite merged them, so choose the district that matches your days. Bucharest is the capital and the busiest hotel market in the country, while Brașov, Sibiu, Bran and Sinaia sit in the Carpathians, close to castles and ski slopes. Constanta and Eforie cover the coast.
Beyond the big names, smaller towns give you a quieter base: Sighisoara, Alba Iulia, Oradea and Cluj-Napoca for history and city life, Predeal, Busteni, Rasnov and Azuga along the Prahova valley, Sovata, Baile Herculane and Vatra Dornei for spa and mountain air. Lists are ordered by distance from the centre.

Photo: tiredtraveller / PexelsThree-star hotels carry the bulk of the stock across the region, and in smaller towns they are often the only choice; they suit travellers who want a simple base and to spend the day outside. Four-star hotels add space and service and are the best compromise in places like Timisoara, Brasov and Sibiu. Five-star hotels cluster in the big cities and resorts: Bucharest has 15, Brasov 10, Sinaia 8, Sibiu 7, while Timisoara, Constanta and Cluj-Napoca hold 5, 5 and 7. Where a town has no five-star, as in Eforie Nord, Pitesti or Baia Mare, four-star is the top tier.

For a first trip, Timisoara, Bucharest, Brasov and Sibiu have the deepest choice. Bucharest alone has 45 hotels and 15 five-star properties, Brasov 40 with 10 five-star, Sibiu 30 with 7, and Timisoara 289 hotels with 5 five-star.
Family-friendly hotels are most numerous in Timisoara with 170, then Sinaia with 24, Bran with 21, and Eforie Nord with 22. Busteni, Costinesti, Vatra Dornei and Curtea De Arges also stand out, each with more than 20 family properties.
Parking is widest in Timisoara at 193 hotels, then Bran with 27, Rasnov with 25, Costinesti and Vatra Dornei with 25 each, and Eforie Nord with 24. Bucharest is the exception, with parking at just 3 hotels.
Bucharest leads with 15 five-star hotels out of 45, ahead of Brasov with 10, Sinaia with 8, Sibiu and Cluj-Napoca with 7 each, and Timisoara and Constanta with 5 each.
It depends on the season. Sinaia, Brasov, Bran and Busteni offer mountain hotels, with 8, 10, 2 and 1 five-star properties. For the sea, Constanta has 5 five-star hotels and Eforie 2, with Eforie Nord adding 24 hotels with parking.
Yes, they make up most of the stock in smaller places. Slatina and Lugoj list three-star hotels only, and Sovata, Pitesti, Satu Mare and Baia Mare have no five-star properties, so four-star is the top available.
